Cal Flame’s Friday Motivation

It’a the last Friday of August 2016, and it’s the last weekend before we’re officially in back-to-school mode. It’s time for one last final summer send off before returning to our normal day-to-day routine, and there is no better way to do so than with a one last summer cookout. 36a3689a92de35e4b08f4571397d39ea

For some Friday Motivation, look forward to having a cookout this weekend to celebrate the final days of summer. One last hoorah if you will, but of course you will still catch us grilling up a storm in the middle of a storm so no promises this is our last BBQ of the year. *wink*17_Family Cal Flame_Lg

Grill a Little Greener

In recent years, more and more people are becoming aware of the Eco-Friendly Movement. When it comes to grilling, we can choose to grill a little greener to reduce and limit the permanent damage being done to Mother Earth. Between choosing products that reduce the use of natural resources, to being a little smarter when cleaning our grills, it’s really up to us to make a difference.

Though there doesn’t seem to be an obvious eco-friendly choice when it comes to what fuels your grill, there are still a few things you can do to lessen the environmental impact of your weekend barbecue.17_Family Cal Flame_Lg

Follow these simple tips from ChowHound.com on how to grill and be environmentally friendly.

Use Nontoxic Cleaners
It’s best to clean your grill with a heavy-duty grill brush and some elbow grease, but if you’re going to use a spray-on cleaner, go for one that’s nontoxic.

Buy Sustainable Charcoal
If you’re buying lump charcoal, look for brands like Wicked Good, Nature’s Own Chunk Charwood, and the Original Charcoal Company, which are made from sustainably harvested wood. Lazzari also produces a 100 percent mesquite lump charcoal made from prunings, dead and fallen wood, and selectively harvested wood.

If you opt for briquettes, avoid instant-light varieties—they’re soaked in petroleum products—and conventional briquettes that use fillers like coal dust and petroleum binders.

Grill Good Food
What’s on top of your grate is just as important as what’s underneath it. Try to use seasonal, local, and organic produce and meats.

Put Down the Lighter Fluid!
There’s no need to use toxic lighter fluid to ignite charcoal when you can use a chimney starter. They’re simple: Stuff some old newspaper in the bottom, fill the top with charcoal, and light the paper. At around $10 to $15, they’re also cheap. Plus, your food won’t have any off flavors from unburned lighter fluid residue.  You can also make one out of an old coffee can by removing both ends, using a church key bottle opener to cut holes around the bottom rim, placing the chimney on top of your grill, and proceeding with the newspaper, charcoal, and ignition.Food-on-grill-1024x807

Grilling in the Springtime

Spring… the snow is melting, the birds are chirping, and the grill is heating. Springtime is around the corner which means there will soon be an abundance of produce available to take your grilling to the next level. Next time you are in the grocery store make sure to grab some fresh spring fruits and vegetables to add another dimension of flavor to your plate.avo4

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Avocadoes
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Vidalia onions
  • Zucchini

Vegetables cook quickly and delicious with just the right hint of smoke from the grill. Add a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper and just the right amount of oil to keep them drying and sticking to the grill.

A helpful hint to remember is that although vegetables cook fairly quickly, they all vary in cooking times. Some take about a minute or two while denser vegetables, like potatoes, will take longer.

An easy way to cook a variety of vegetables is by putting them on a skewer. This will also prevent smaller vegetables from falling through. If you chop larger vegetables up, take into consideration cooking time. Relatively larger pieces will take longer than smaller pieces.Premium 4 Burner Grill

If you don’t have a diligent grill to use this springtime, don’t fret! Cal Flame BBQ has got you covered! We offer an array of drop-in grills, barbecue islands and accessories to complete you dream outdoor kitchen.

Outdoor Living with Cal Flame

Extending your living space to the great outdoors is a simple way to take advantage of the entire square footage of your home. Instead of being “domesticated” Americans, there is a growing trend of making the backyard more comfortable to enjoy a paleolithic gathering.  GPV3032-Medium

According to HPBA, Americans have always “lived” outdoors, but the concept of Outdoor Living is a relatively new and rapidly growing lifestyle phenomenon. What is Outdoor Living? It no longer means just a few folding chairs, a picnic table, and a hibachi. It means bringing all the comforts of indoor living to the outdoors.

The mainstays of an outdoor room are:

  1. an appliance to cook;
  2. a dining table and chairs to sit and eat;
  3. a hearth product to extend the season.

Today’s consumers have an incredible selection of products to make Outdoor Living one of the most pleasurable aspects of owning a home.12143333_751258724985997_5222259300474666428_n

Tips for Grilling in Winter

Cal Flame wants to ensure that you enjoy grilling all year long, including Winter! In some areas of the United States, extreme weather conditions can make grilling outdoors more difficult. Follow these tips for grilling in winter:

1.  Cal Flame Grills are Built to Last
The porcelain-enamel is glass fused to high-quality steel, and it is baked on at an estimated 1700 degrees Fahrenheit.  This superior quality that means that your grill will hold in heat well during the colder weather, and keep you grilling through the winter. Cal Flame BBQ grills are built to last and have been rigorously tested for performance.

2.  Cover Your Grill
Cal Flame BBQ Grill Covers are a must-have not only during the colder winter months to protect your grill from snow, but also during summer and fall to keep your grill scratch free and debris free. During the winter, your grill may be covered in snow so we suggest dusting snow off with a shovel.

3.  Keep it Charged
It’s a good idea to keep an extra tank of gas next to your grill for extra power. During the colder winter months it will take more gas to keep your grill hot how you want it. Having an extra tank will keep your grill going and prevent the need for returning to the store.grill-a-la-cart-series

4. Don’t Open Your Grill
It is cold outside, opening your grill will reduce your grill’s temperature and extend your cooking time. Instead of peaking inside your grill to check on your food, get your grill to the desired temperature, set your meat, set your timer and close the lid. Keep the lid closed! Once your timer goes off, check on your meat.

5.  Stay Warm, Stay Safe
Make sure to keep yourself protected. Wear your protective grilling gloves and warm gear to protect yourself from extreme weather conditions. A Cal Flame outdoor fireplace or firepit also makes a great addition to your patio. 12143333_751258724985997_5222259300474666428_n

Grilling Thanksgiving Day Turkey

The big day is upon us, Thanksgiving is only a few short days away. Many of us may have tucked our grills away from the remainder of the year, but there are some true barbecue enthusiasts who insist on grilling their Thanksgiving Turkey!

Grilling a turkey doesn’t sound too bad, right? I mean, a chicken is a bird, a turkey is a bird, there aren’t many differences, right? Wrong! how-to-grill-a-turkey

Beside being much larger than a chicken, whole turkey must be paid close attention to while grilling (you only get one shot a year to make this scrumptious perfection).Kamado Grill Enviroment

Butterball has got the perfect step-by-step guide on how to grill a Turkey on a Charcoal and Gas Grill this Thanksgiving:

OUTDOOR CHARCOAL GRILLING

Charcoal grilling can give you an amazing flavor when you use the right technique. For tasty results use these instructions:

  • Prepare charcoal-covered grill by removing cooking grate and opening all vents.
  • Position drip pan in center of charcoal grate and place 25 to 30 briquettes along each side (lengthwise) of drip pan. Burn briquettes until covered with gray ash, about 30 minutes. Place cooking grate in grill over coals.
  • Prepare fresh or thawed turkey by removing giblets and neck, draining juices and patting dry with clean paper towels.
  • Turn wings back to hold neck skin in place and tuck legs. Brush or spray entire turkey with cooking or vegetable oil.
  • Place turkey, breast up, on cooking grate over drip pan. Cover grill, leaving vents open.
  • Add 6 to 8 briquettes to each side every 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Using meat thermometer, cook turkey to internal temperature of 180° F in thigh and 170° F in breast.
  • 10 to 16 lb. turkeys will take 2 to 3 hours to grill. When done, remove and let stand for 15 minutes before carving.

Floating Cal Flame Installation

The convenience of installing a grill in the backyard is something that you can benefit year-round. Cal Flame BBQ offers stand alone grills, carts and full outdoor kitchens so you may use all square footage of your home. The best thing about Cal Flame grills is the ability to customize them, take this floating Cal Flame grill installation for example:

IMG_1544 Not only does it look beautiful, but it also saves space on the deck.

This grill installation was curated by Mr. Tony Hermanutz, from www.IronTreeSculptures.com, at his Washington mountain side home. Hermanutz, whose artistic element is usually in metal sculptures, decided to take this unique idea and give it a go.

The result? Breathtaking.

IMG_1545

Cal Flame: Were there any problems you were faced with during the installation? How did you overcome them?

Hermanutz: I had to make sure the railing was strong enough for the Cal Flame grill. The railing was mad out of 3/8 wall rectangular tubing and channel iron. I wanted the rain cover to have a low profile but also be strong enough to handle the winds we get up on this Mountain. Not to mention it would be 1,000 foot drop if something went wrong, it took 4 of us to get the grill in place. The rain cover has a pivot so it be let down and cleaned when needed. The custom enclosure is made out of 304 stainless buffed and clear coated. The conversion to Natural Gas was easy. I had Industrial Supply make up a custom ½ inch natural gas hose, not sure if it made a difference but this BBQ heats up faster than I expected from Natural Gas.

Cal Flame: With you artistic eye, what advice would you give a customer looking to implement a barbecue into their backyard? Where would be the best place in a backyard to install a barbecue?

Hermanutz: On the cool/artistic side this BBQ speaks for itself, 304 stainless construction and for me the Cast Stainless burners. Since you should not have to worry about changing out your BBQ every 2 to 4 years because the burners burn out it makes sense to install this in a custom spot. The location can vary depending on the customer needs. But in most cases it should be close to the food prep area, kitchen or if you have the room/money go mac daddy with everything in one location. If you can do that then it can be located anywhere you like. For me the driving force for my design  was my view  from my deck. I wanted the lowest profile possible.

Gas or Charcoal?

The ever standing questions still stands: Gas or Charcoal? Though either can get the job done, many chefs swear by one or the other. What’s the right cooking technique for you?Cal Flame Outdoor Kitchen

Here are some pros and cons, first for charcoal:

Pros: Most professional cooks prefer charcoal grills. It gives a deeper smoky flavor, and, used properly, it produces a clean heat with a high temperature. Cooking over coals gives a seared crust, and once you’ve got it, you can move the meat to a lower-heat area to finish cooking. Some charcoal grills have a “gas-assist” feature that helps light the charcoal but uses the charcoal for cooking.

Cons: It is time-consuming to light the fire and wait for the coals to burn to the right degree. Like, say, 2-year-old kids, coal fires can be unpredictable and messy to clean. The charcoal may need to be replenished during the cooking process to handle long, slow-barbecued meats.Food-on-grill-1024x807

And now for gas:

Pros: Gas is convenient, easy to use and quick to light, and gas fires have an even heat. Longing for that smoky flavor? You can create it by allowing the juices and fat to drip onto the stones and briefly catch fire (be vigilant watching for a bonfire when cooking chicken with skin on). The fuel supply can be used over and over again and is easy to replace.

Cons: Most gas grills won’t burn as hot as a charcoal grill, although a few high-end gas grills hit the heights of heat. Drippy fat or no, gas doesn’t quite give the level of smoky flavor that charcoal grills do.

Cal Flame BBQ offers additional add-on features to increase the flavor and intensity of your barbecued meats. From rotisserie baskets, to sear zone burners and smoke trays, Cal Flame makes sure that each and every meal grilled on a Cal Flame is the ultimate feast!Charcoal Helper Tray
