How to Perfectly Grill a Medium Rare Burger Every time
1. MAKE YOUR OWN PATTIES
Although the pre-made patties may be tempting when you walk by them at the grocery store, a good quality and high fat content ground beef makes a world of a difference. If you’d like to go the healthy route choose your meat with a high levels of protein and contents of fat. If you’re against eating beef, we’d suggest turkey or chicken as an alternative. If your vegetarian or vegan we’d recommend falafel or a Portobello mushroom.
The best grilled burger have a higher lean-to-fat ratio. So if you forego the healthy route we believe the fatter burgers are more robust in flavor.
Season your patty well with salt and pepper, but make sure not to overdo the salt because this tends to give the meat a rubbery texture. You can try other seasons and spices but from our experience over seasoning the meat overpowers your add ons (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, bun). Keep it simple the best burgers aren’t heavily seasoned.
2. STICK AN ICE CUBE IN THE CENTER OF THE PATTY
This is an odd trick, but stay with us! Sticking a small ice cube in the center of the patty is perfect for the medium rare lovers. Cooking the patty with an ice cube in the center will cook the patty perfectly to keep the center of the patty slightly underdone while allowing the outside of the patty to cook faster.
3. KEEP YOUR PATTY THICK
A thicker burger means a juicier burger. This happens because the juiciness comes from the slightly undercooked, medium-rare meat. When it is thicker, it holds more juice, so make sure not to press your patties down with a spatula! This will cause them to lose all that delicious moisture.
But to REALLY enhance the flavor, all of the best grill master use enhance their burgers flavor and control their flares ups with a flavor bar to prevent grease from dripping into your burner. This gives you the precision to control your grill’s temperature & cook the PERFECT burger. We also recommend getting a flavor bar to give your burgers that “cooked on a grill” smoky flavor.
4. PICK THE RIGHT BUN
The bun is EVERYTHING! We can’t emphasize this enough. You are going to want a bun with a full-bodied flavor and texture. It shouldn’t be too soft or too firm – you have to find that happy medium.
We recommend a Hawaiian bun or roll.
This bun will completely upgrade and bring out the flavors of your patty. We can’t talk about Hawaiian rolls & buns enough. If you want to grill your buns, feel free to add some butter to get crispy, succulent edges. But don’t keep the buns on too long.
5. EAT YOUR BURGERS STRAIGHT OFF THE GRILL
This tip may be a little controversial, but you shouldn’t let your burger patties rest. Slap it on a bun and enjoy your juicy burger straight off the grill!
Be sure to wipe down your area and clean off the grill grates before using your grill again. Be sure to protect your grill form weather damage with a grill cover. This means less maintenance, less of an upkeep and less cleaning.
