Grilling in the Springtime

Spring… the snow is melting, the birds are chirping, and the grill is heating. Springtime is around the corner which means there will soon be an abundance of produce available to take your grilling to the next level. Next time you are in the grocery store make sure to grab some fresh spring fruits and vegetables to add another dimension of flavor to your plate.avo4

  • Artichokes
  • Asparagus
  • Avocadoes
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Vidalia onions
  • Zucchini

Vegetables cook quickly and delicious with just the right hint of smoke from the grill. Add a pinch of salt, a pinch of pepper and just the right amount of oil to keep them drying and sticking to the grill.

A helpful hint to remember is that although vegetables cook fairly quickly, they all vary in cooking times. Some take about a minute or two while denser vegetables, like potatoes, will take longer.

An easy way to cook a variety of vegetables is by putting them on a skewer. This will also prevent smaller vegetables from falling through. If you chop larger vegetables up, take into consideration cooking time. Relatively larger pieces will take longer than smaller pieces.Premium 4 Burner Grill

Fourth of July Cookout

Okay everyone, this is it: the biggest barbecue day of the YEAR! While some of us might be preoccupied wondering what the headliner on their plate will be at this year’s Fourth of July Cookout, and others have made up their mind after wrapping up last year’s feast. But this isn’t about the main dish, oh no ladies and gentleman, contrary to popular belief the delicacies are only a portion of what makes a cookout a real EVENT. It’s really all about coming together on a warm evening to celebrate with friends, family and food. Here are some Independence Day-inspired activities you could share with family at this year’s Fourth of July Cookout!4th of julyFourth of July is, for the most part, a warm day/evening, cool off with some water activities that the entire family can join in on. Water balloons are a fun, and cost-effective way to cool down while waiting for the food to be ready. Hot Potato is an all time favorite.

For dessert, host a watermelon eating contest. Whoever wins gets first-pick on fireworks or an extra sparkler. How about having a ring-toss game with glowsticks? Stake down some sticks upright and toss glowstick necklaces, and see how many you can make in.

When your Fourth of July get together begins to wind down, get in a last sugar rush with some tabletop s’mores. Place a foil cover inside small terracotta pots, drop-in some charcoal and let the sparks keep flying.Al-La-Cart-Deluxe-medium

Get Ready For Barbecue Season!

Tomorrow marks the first day of Spring which means sunshine, flowers, the birds and the bees, and allergies. But that also means it’s most wonderful time of the year: barbecue season!8534987224_ab81facfe1_o

There are several steps you can take to make sure you do not miss out on America’s favorite outdoor activity this year! Just keep on reading to find out.

Now would be a great time to thaw out your grill from Winter and conduct an annual check up. Make sure to test you unit out and see if any parts need replacement, this includes the propane tank.

If everything seems to be working great, give your grilling some loving and dry scrub your unit from the inside. That black gunk on your grill won’t make your food taste any better, it’s just burnt-on dirt. While you’re at it, clean the outside so you can show that bad boy off and be the envy of all your friends.Al-La-Cart-Deluxe-medium

Check your grills hot spots. “And how do I do that?” Well, I am glad you asked! Cover your grill grates with slices of white bread and run your grill on high. After a couple of minutes, cut the heat and turn the slices over. The more toasted slices indicate the hotter spots. Now you’ll be able to place food on your grill accordingly.

If you’re old traditional grill decided to take a leap of faith this and cannot be revived. I invite you to take a glance at Cal Flame’s extensive offering of BBQ grills. Thanksgiving Day Hacks

Thanksgiving Day is notorious for being one of those stressful holidays.

Thankfully, the Huffington Post has provided us with 13 Cooking Hacks that will make your Thanksgiving a little easier.

1.) Make fluffier mashed potatoes by adding a pinch of baking powder when mashing. The powder mixes with the heat and forms tiny air pockets, and making your mashed potatoes the best on the block!slide_383866_4578582_free

2.) Store mashed potatoes in a slow-cooker. Not only will this free up your stove-top burner, but it will also keep your mashed potatoes warm and ready to enjoy.

3.) Let your dishwasher wash the potatoes for you — and peel them when they come out clean. OR, boil them with the skin on and give them a dunk in cold water once cooked. This will shock the skins loose and make peeling a breeze.

4.) You can slow-cook your turkey overnight. Wait, what? Pop the bird in the oven the evening before and wake up to a nearly completed Thanksgiving feast. Here’s the recipe.

5.) Save your dried out turkey with chicken broth. It happens, people! Pour a little warm chicken broth on top of the slices to add flavor and warmth.slide_383866_4578926_free

6.) Make your pie dough in advance, and then freeze it! It’s one less thing you have to do around the big day. Or, you could just buy one already made. We won’t tell.

7.) Use dried beans or rice in place of pie weights and fashion yourself a pie shield out of aluminum foil.slide_383866_4578862_free

8.) Prepare your gravy ahead of time! That way you don’t have to stress about the gravy when all you and everyone else wants to do is sit down and eat.

9.) Store your gravy in thermos. Genius!

10.) You can chop your veggies and freeze them, days before the big day!

11.) Chop garlic in 10-seconds. Seriously! Here’s the video.

12.) Bring out your cooler. It works as a second fridge. Everything that doesn’t fit in the refrigerator – which is a lot on Thanksgiving – goes in the cooler. It’s so simple, yet so genius.slide_383866_4578628_free

13.) Print out your recipes and tape them to your cabinets. It’ll free up the much-needed counter space that cookbooks or computers take up. Clever!

These 13 simple steps could turn your stressful Thanksgiving Day into an enjoyable experience. Too bad we don’t have a Black Friday survival guide.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Healthier Cooking Methods: Grilling versus Frying / Nutrition / Healthy Eating
www.fitday.com

Cooking methods have a significant impact on the quality of food you consume. Grilling and frying are two popular methods used to cook food. To grill foods, you place them on a wire grid placed under or above a dry heat source. The food is cooked by thermal radiation. It is also referred to as broiling or pan grilling.

Fried foods are usually dipped into a fryer or pan that contains very hot oil or fat. Foods may be deep fried or shallow fried. The high temperatures and high heat conductivity cooks the food. This yields attractive, crispy food with a great aroma. However, the quality of food drops considerably when fried. Many fried foods can be grilled as a healthier alternative.

Disadvantages of Frying

When foods are fried, they absorb a lot of fat. Even if the food was a low fat item, it ends up with a high fat content when fried. When consumed, it increases the blood cholesterol level. High cholesterol levels pose greater risks to health. Arteries get clogged over time. This prevents the smooth flow of blood and increases blood pressure. High cholesterol levels also increase the risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Higher calorie intake from fried foods results in weight gain. It becomes more difficult to manage a healthy weight program when fried foods are eaten regularly in the diet. Other foods, such as vegetables, loose much of their moisture and easily perishable vitamins when fried. This is because of the extremely high temperatures of the heated oil. Although fried food may be tasty with a great texture, it is harder to digest than grilled foods. This is because of the high amount of fat absorbed by the food as it cooks. Foods with a high fat content exert more pressure on the digestive system and organs. This contributes to disorders of the digestive tract. It also exacerbates conditions such as ulcers and gallstones. A healthier cooking alternative to frying is grilling.

Health Benefits of Grilling

Grilled meats have a reduced fat content. This is because the fat drips off as the food cooks. It results in healthier meals and makes it easier to manage a low fat diet. Grilled foods also have lower calorie content than fried foods. This helps in weight management and keeping fit. Reduced fat intake helps to lower bad cholesterol levels in the blood. Healthy cholesterol levels improve cardiovascular health. Various health conditions such as obesity, stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes become a risk with fried foods.

When you grill your food, it helps to reduce the risk of such diseases. It also ensures that you get more value out of your food. This is because of the shorter cooking time involved when you grill. It results in minimal loss of moisture and vitamins from vegetables. This ensures that as much of the nutritional content is retained in the food when cooked. Healthy cooking contributes to good health and overall wellbeing.
